New Chapter for Maghera as £3.4m Public Realm Scheme Officially Launched
6th October 2025

The official launch of the Maghera Public Realm and Environmental Improvement Scheme has been hailed as a turning point for the town, with particular praise directed at contractors CivCo for their role in delivering the project to a high standard.
The £3.4m investment was funded through the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund and part-funded and delivered by Mid Ulster District Council.
Phase One of the scheme, carried out by CivCo, involved the transformation of the town centre, including renewed streetscape, enhanced lighting, attractive landscaping, and improved public spaces.
The transformation will not only improve the daily experience of residents but also lay the groundwork for future regeneration and economic growth.
Speaking at the launch, Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Cllr Frances Burton, highlighted the quality of delivery:
“A very special acknowledgement must go to CivCo, our local contractors, whose skill, dedication, and hard work have brought this vision to life. Their efforts, often in challenging circumstances, have ensured that this scheme was delivered to a high standard and with respect for the town and its community.”
Cllr Burton added:
“The transformation will not only improve the daily experience of residents but also lay the groundwork for future regeneration and economic growth.”
Her comments were echoed by Una Morgan, Chairperson of the Maghera Town Centre Forum, who stressed the importance of pride and community ownership:
“The improvements we have seen in Maghera have really made a visible and positive difference to the town. Access has improved and it is now much easier for people to experience all that Maghera has to offer. There is no doubt that the new infrastructure will encourage more visitors and shoppers to the town centre, further stimulating Maghera’s economy and supporting its local businesses to thrive.”
“This project has made Maghera more attractive and accessible, supporting the people who live here. In particular, I would like to thank the subcontractors and CivCo’s men on the ground, who were extremely pleasant and helpful to everyone throughout the works.”
The scheme represents the beginning of a new chapter for Maghera, enhancing the town’s visual appeal while supporting economic growth and regeneration.
The project has also been recognised as a model of partnership working, with collaboration between the Council, funders, design team and CivCo key to its success.
Gavin Connolly, Contracts Manager at CivCo, added:
“We are delighted to have successfully delivered this project for Maghera in partnership with Mid Ulster District Council and our design colleagues at RPS.”
“At its core, the scheme was about providing spaces that the community can take pride in. We greatly appreciate the patience and cooperation of local residents and businesses during the works, and it is rewarding to already see the benefits the improvements are bringing to the town.”
As the first phase of investment is unveiled, the scheme is being seen as a catalyst for further regeneration and business opportunities, cementing Maghera’s role as a vibrant town centre within Mid Ulster.
