PROJECT BRIEF
CivCo was contracted to develop a dynamic and inclusive public park on Belfast’s Newtownards Road, transforming approximately 6,314m² of urban space into a vibrant community hub. The project included the redevelopment of an existing playground, green space, games area and public realm to provide enhanced recreational and social facilities for the local community.

PROJECT KEY POINTS
The redevelopment involved extensive modifications and upgrades, including:
Demolition & Site Preparation
- Removal of pre-existing street furniture, playground equipment, trees and redundant infrastructure as identified in the contract drawings.
- Earthworks to achieve the required site levels for new installations.
Landscaping & Public Realm Enhancements
- Installation of hedges, planting beds, trees and wooden fencing to define designated areas.
- Surfacing of pathways with paving and kerbing to improve accessibility and aesthetics.
- Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) to manage surface water runoff effectively.
Infrastructure & Utility Upgrades
- Upgrades to NI Water (NIW) infrastructure, including ducting and water main diversions.
- Installation of foul and surface water drainage, including a flow control device and an interceptor.
- Extensive public lighting and electrical services to ensure usability and safety throughout the park.
Recreational Facilities
- Construction of a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) featuring a covered sports zone, outdoor fitness equipment, footpaths, security fencing and floodlighting.
- Development of a community garden area with a dedicated children's play zone, turfed grass sections, seating areas and a pergola.
Additional Features
- Installation of street furniture, lighting columns, barriers, bollards, fencing and gates.
- A flexible multi-purpose community space fitted with customised shipping containers inspired by the region's shipbuilding heritage.
- Final landscaping, topographical surveys and comprehensive site cleaning.
PROJECT OUTCOME
This redevelopment has transformed Pitt Park into a thriving, multifunctional community space that caters to all age groups and abilities. The new facilities promote physical activity, social engagement and community-led initiatives, ensuring long-term benefits for the residents of East Belfast.
