Claudy Country Park Regeneration

CLIENT

Claudy Country Park Refurbishment

TIME FRAME

October 2023 – March 2024

PROJECT BRIEF

The refurbishment of Claudy Country Park’s play area and surrounding environments aimed to enhance the recreational experience while maintaining the park’s natural integrity. This project involved upgrading and refurbishing designated areas, including the play area, pathways, fencing and drainage systems.

A key challenge was ensuring that construction activities did not disrupt public access, as the park and car park remained open throughout the project. Additionally, the works had to be carried out with strict adherence to environmental regulations, given the park’s designation as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and an Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI).

Drainage & Environmental Works

  • Pathway Drainage Solutions: Natural drainage diversions and soakaways were implemented to prevent water accumulation on paths.
  • Embankment Stabilisation: Reinforcement of an eroded pathway section to prevent further damage caused by the adjacent river.

Health, Safety & Environmental Considerations

  • Public Access Management: The park and car park remained open, requiring proactive pedestrian and vehicle management for public safety.
  • Environmental Sensitivity: Given the presence of invasive species and the site’s protected status, works were conducted with strict environmental controls to prevent ecological disruption.

PROJECT OUTCOME

The refurbishment successfully modernised Claudy Country Park’s play area while preserving the park’s character and environmental integrity. By integrating new play structures with existing ones and upgrading essential infrastructure, the project enhanced visitor experience and safety. The careful execution of drainage and embankment works ensured long-term sustainability, while public access was effectively managed throughout construction.

This project highlights the importance of balancing recreational development with environmental stewardship, ensuring that Claudy Country Park remains a vibrant and sustainable community asset.
