PROJECT BRIEF
CivCo delivered a comprehensive programme of external façade repairs and redecoration at the Assembly Rooms, Belfast, for Belfast City Council, in close consultation with the Department for Communities. The works were required to be completed ahead of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in August 2026 and were successfully delivered ahead of schedule. The project protected the historic building fabric, enhanced the appearance of this prominent Belfast landmark and supported its long-term maintenance and preservation.
Dating from 1769, the Grade B1 listed Assembly Rooms is one of Belfast’s most prominent and architecturally important heritage buildings. Located at the junction of Waring Street and North Street, it has played a significant role in the city’s history, notably hosting the Belfast Harp Festival in 1792. CivCo’s work helped safeguard the exterior of this important landmark while ensuring the building was ready to welcome visitors ahead of the major cultural event.
Works involved the preparation, repair and repainting of the external façade, existing window frames and three external doors, with careful protection of existing features, architectural details and exposed timber. Vegetation was removed from the building exterior, while localised repairs to the rainwater goods improved water management and helped protect the building fabric. Access was provided using mobile elevating work platforms, reducing the need for internal access. No internal or roof works were undertaken.
As the Assembly Rooms occupy a prominent and busy city-centre location, the project required careful management of working areas, pedestrian routes, traffic and access to neighbouring businesses. Noise, vibration and disruption were controlled throughout the works, with appropriate measures implemented to protect surrounding properties, members of the public and road users.

PROJECT OUTCOME
The completed project provided the Assembly Rooms with a refreshed and better-protected exterior while preserving the building ahead of any more comprehensive future conservation works.
The treatment improved the building’s appearance, provided ongoing protection to its external walls, windows and doors and addressed vegetation growth and defects affecting the rainwater goods. The completed works also helped present the Assembly Rooms appropriately ahead of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, which took place in August 2026.
This project demonstrates a careful and practical approach to maintaining a prominent Belfast building within a constrained city-centre setting, balancing the protection of the historic building fabric with public safety, environmental responsibility and the needs of surrounding businesses.
